23-25 August, 2013
For the third year running, we headed out to Parkes and the Back Yamma State Forest for a fun weekend away at a great mountain bike race – the Back Yamma Bigfoot.
We were being joined on the Friday evening by John and Fi, some friends of ours from Orange, as well as the Posties later on Saturday. We had a great meal on Friday night, then settled back into bed relatively early as the cool descended.
Unfortunately we were awoken in the wee small hours of the morning by some lovely local guys who had decided that our campsite was a great place to perform a bit of circlework. This wasn’t a great experience, as we were quite concerned that they might lose control completely and come crashing into the camper.
They hung around for what seemed like ages, but was probably only about 10 minutes before heading back off into the darkness, however our sleep was now well and truly disturbed.
The riding itself was again awesome, with even more singletrack… particularly in the second half of the loop – which would make it tough to improve on times from previous years.
In previous years I’ve started towards the back of the field, and had to spend the whole race trying to work my way through. This year, I started in probably the top 20% of the field, and decided to try and keep my pace high for as long as I could. There must have been something good in that tactic, as I ended up taking nearly 10 minutes off my previous best and finished the course of a little over 50km in about 2h20min, which I was really happy with.
We had originally planned to stay for 3 nights, but with our disturbing Friday night, decided that we would pack up, and drive back to Sydney on the Sunday afternoon.
Two nights here takes our running total to 127.
